Know who your agreement is with

Before paying, identify the company accepting your reservation. It might be the hotel, a travel agent, or a booking platform. Save the full confirmation, the cancellation policy, the payment schedule, and any written promises that influenced your decision. Keep a copy you can access while travelling.

Read the terms that change the trip

Look for cancellation deadlines and their time zone, no-show charges, deposit rules, and the process for changing dates. For a wedding, group booking, or long stay, clarify room blocks, minimum spend, third-party suppliers, and responsibility for damage. Ask for unclear points to be explained in writing before signing.

If something goes wrong

Create a factual timeline and gather correspondence, receipts, and relevant photographs. Contact the business through its stated complaint process and describe the outcome you are requesting. Avoid assuming that a refund rule or dispute process in one country applies in another.

When to consult a lawyer

For a substantial dispute, cross-border contract, injury, or complex event agreement, a qualified lawyer or attorney in the relevant jurisdiction can assess the facts. Check professional registration and agree fees in advance. This editorial checklist is general information and does not establish any particular legal entitlement.
