Start with the trip, then the card
A travel credit card should fit the way you already travel. Write down the destinations, hotel brands, and airlines you expect to use. A rewards programme is easier to assess when you have an actual trip in mind. Separate benefits you will use from attractive extras that are unlikely to change your plans.
Compare the costs on one page
Read the issuer’s current terms for the annual fee, purchase APR, foreign transaction fee, and eligibility requirements. Check how points are earned and redeemed, whether rewards expire, and whether a hotel redemption has blackout dates or restrictions. A debit card, credit card, and prepaid card can behave differently at hotel check-in; ask the hotel about deposit holds.
Look beyond the welcome offer
Make a short comparison of lounge access, hotel status, travel insurance, cashback, and redemption flexibility. Benefits may require enrolment or payment with the card. Read the actual benefit documents and use a conservative estimate for anything you may not redeem. Interest and fees can outweigh rewards.
Before you leave
Confirm your payment limits, keep a backup payment method separately, and save your issuer’s support details. When comparing cards, use official issuer information and the consumer regulator for your country. This guide is a comparison checklist, not a recommendation to apply for a financial product.
